Mobile advertising is a term used for advertising carried out by means of mobile phones. With number of mobile users and service providers increasing, mobile advertising is bound to become popular in huge manner in times to come. It can be easily said that mobile advertising is future of advertising. Total number of mobile users by end of year 2008 is expected to rise to 4 billion. Internet giants like Yahoo and Google have also realized the potential of mobile advertising and this is the reason why they are also moving in this space.

Media industry and advertisers have already started using mobile advertising for achieving stated goals and for increasing customer base. Mobile technology, as we see today, is quite evolved and various types of applications like pictures, ring tones, movie clips, etc have also supported mobile advertising in an excellent manner. Latest way of mobile advertising that is attracting more and more numbers of people across the globe is Bluetooth advertising. This type of advertising enables a company in advertising its products and services over a predetermined area. Marketing strategies are being made by companies to utilize Bluetooth radio application of mobile phones. As per the study conducted, it has been seen that about 30% of people keep their Bluetooth radios on and this can easily be used in effective manner for promotion of products and services. It is also believed that by the year 2010, about 50% of mobile phones would have Bluetooth radio facility enabled and on. This also gives support to belief that future of advertising is mobile advertising. Through mobile advertising, whole advertising content is transmitted to mobile phone users. This is also called as proximity marketing and is carried out by means of Media Content Server.

Mobile advertising has many advantages and these advantages have forced many companies to look beyond tradition ways for allowing their products and services to reach large mass of people. As per the survey conducted, it is found that people do not like to watch television or listen to radio for good hours in a day. This shift in habit has also forced advertising and other companies to go for mobile advertising. Cost of mobile advertising is also very low as compared to cost of traditional way of advertising and it is considered as one of most cost effective ways of advertising that provides ideal platform to advertisers and companies. Potential attached is huge though it requires companies to understand mobile users and usage completely.

Keeping the above views in mind, many mobile operators have revamped mobile internet packages. New packages announced allow a person to be online at cheaper costs. This has also helped companies to advertise their products to larger group of people.

Our intention is to request for your patience. As every evolution goes through different stages of maturity before bearing fruits, the same is happening with m-earn. There are three engines to this evolution- you as subscribers, we as facilitators and the third - advertisers. All three are inter-related with a critical cut off needed to mutually impact the other. When the subscriber base grows, this engine ignites the advertising engine and the mobile economy will start rolling.

m-earn is a target profile based advertising. Such campaigns need a huge database of subscribers. Not only that, the database should reach a critical size in terms of localization, gender, income and preferences. Some profiles take more time to reach a critical mass for attracting advertisers, than others. So if you were not getting ads in the recent past, all that we request, is a bit more patience.

Mobile Advertising Research

With the advent of mobile marketing in to India, the advertising landscape is poised for a change. Despite its infancy, the advantages that this new media offers with such direct, personalized messages provide tremendous growth opportunities.

In Asian markets, especially in India, people with multi lingo-cultural and ethnic diversity provide both immense challenges and opportunities to advertisers, and to the service industry.

However, much depends on fresh and independent market research inputs. Research targeted at varied socioeconomic strata, on formats, styles, content need to be evaluated. To make their mobile campaigns more effective, advertisers should take note of how cell phone users are most interested in being contacted. Advertisements need to have a clear value proposition, be relevant and allow recipients to control how they are profiled.

The studies in US indicate that 35 percent of adult cell phone users are willing to accept incentive-based advertisements. Of these adults, 78 percent say the best incentive would be cold hard cash, followed by free minutes (63 percent), free entertainment downloads e.g. ring tones, games (40 percent).

The survey further reveals that over half of those who are at least somewhat interested in receiving ads on their cell phone say they would prefer to receive them via text message, while 40 percent would like to receive them as a picture message.

Less than one-quarter of adults would choose to receive them as videos (24 percent), while others would have them transferred automatically to email (23 percent), as a voice message (22 percent) or something else (7 percent) and discount coupons (40 percent).

Among them, 30 percent are willing to receive ads for the right incentive, while 20 percent would receive them if they have control to turn them on or off, and 20 percent are willing to receive ads if they can choose who the information is sent to (i.e. selective ad reception).

However, the marketing models derived from the US data may not fit the Indian situation. Models based on independent data on the emerging medium, cutting across urban-rural target groups, age groups, socio-economic groups can only give right inputs and from it proper content marketing strategies can be derived.
